So in the last post, we left off with a very juicy little Loki kill that I think any self-respecting pirate could pretty much hang their hat on and call it a day. However, I had some time left, so I was around when the call came in from the Devil Suleiman that there was a gate camp over in Parts that he wanted to bust up. So, a fleet was hastily formed – 3 BCs and a Stiletto (Sulei choosing to go hardmode tackler in this one), and we set off. Sulei successfully crashed the party but almost died as an Arty Cane that was on the field initially nearly killed him. He was able to stay on the field, but somehow the Arty Cane got away before the BC crew even check into the fight.
Undaunted, we set about pointing stuff up and shooting, netting a Myrmidon and Harbinger kill. I feel compelled to point out at this time that I had brought a Shield Gank Harbinger out – the very first time I had ever flown it in an actual fight, despite being able to for awhile now. I figured – what the heck, just gonna bust up some lazy gatecampers.
Well, the lazy gatecampers went ahead and reshipped to battleships. We were now faced with the prospect of fighting a Tempest, Armageddon, Dominix, Megathron and Raven. With a Harbinger and two Drakes (and stiletto of course). We starting beating the bushes for some assistance while also probing out the BS gang. As luck would have it the gang split up a little, so we were able to eventually land on a field of just 2 BSes. However, most of our backup had been intercepted by a Shadow Cartel gang on a gate in Aeschee, so we now consisted of 1 Cane, 1 Binger and 2 Drakes (and, of course, the Stiletto). Undaunted, we plunged in, and proceeded to be terribly bad at pointing stuff.
The Raven was shield tanked unlike the rest and was able to get away in low armor or structure – can’t quite recall. We moved on to primary the Dominix, as at this point only the Mega had made it to the field. Trying to keep out of heavy neut range in a ship that can barely hit beyond that same range is quite a task, but I was managing to do alright by being very cautious. The Tempest joined the field and TDs were applied from the Drakes, so all in all we were doing alright. However, the Geddon landed just 5k away from me, and while I gained an initial point, I was soon sucked dry by some neuts.
I managed to scramble away with one last MWD pulse and warp off before I became primary, recovering cap and returning to the field. Eventually, the Armageddon, Dominix and Megathron were dispatched, with the Tempest being able to get away as it had a prop mod that Sulei hadn’t accounted for in his buzzing little gnat of a ship. We took no losses – not even drones – and looted the field. As the gang in question had all been pirates themselves, we had no GCC and were preparing to leave – but then a hapless Cane fell in our path and was quickly disassembled. We waited out GCC then moved on.
Of course, back home, things had been hopping as the Shadow Cartel gang had been reinforced by some Kadavrr Black Guard guys. On the way back we popped another passing BC then gathered in Jovainnon to wait out GCC – mainly because the Shadavrr Cartel Guard had taken up residence around the Hevrice gate there. We gathered some troops together in Hevrice and waited until GCC was gone, then pounced.
Naturally, I was still in the Binger. I was the only one in a Binger. And in the great tradition of target calling, Bingers (especially ones you know to be shield tanked) are nearly always primary. So it was here. I landed, aligned, took some pot shots at a Talos, and warped off (all about as fast as it takes to read that line) in half armor. Already the primaries were being called fast and furious, so I figured I would get back into the fight and maybe take some more pot shots. I did, and once again was redboxed many times. This time I left the field in structure. By the time I came back, we were looting the field, having suffered zero losses and taking out all of the enemy except for the Talos, who somehow managed to elude our grasp at the beginning of the fight. Here is the killboard battle report – ignore the Myrm and 2x Rifter kills as well as the Cane loss, as they weren’t actually in the fight (wtb killboards that work, kthx).
I have to say it was quite a trial by fire for the Harbinger, and while I liked it I also feel like maybe I would remain more comfortable in a Cane for fleets or a Myrm for soloing. My capacitor skills are okay, but not great, and I think to really make the Binger shine you have to have great cap skills. I never once capped myself out (except when neuted of course), but it was pretty hairy managing distance against various targets going various speeds (in the case of the BS gang), and the primary flag the Binger seems to carry essentially took me out of the fight altogether against Shadavrr. But, it survived, and apart from the stupid Ruppie loss at the beginning of the day, I did pretty well for myself in a variety of situations. Not a bad return to the world of Eve.
